Sunsets Through the Seasons: Journal Calendar Pages
A hypothetical stationary company produces journals/planners that include artwork done by small artists wanted to produce a journal that was divided seasonally with corresponding artwork for the calendar pages. After deciding upon a theme, my roles included both illustrating the artwork and creating the layout for the calendar pages to create a set of visually interesting journal pages.
Concept:
As a representation of the seasons changing, what first came to mind was weather and the sky and all of the pictures of sunsets throughout the seasons that are in my camera roll. After deciding which sunset pictures to base my designs on and sketching the initial ideas, I also incorporated more trees into the illustrations to be more indicative of the respective seasons.
Feedback:
The initial reaction was that the illustrations were successful in reflecting the seasons - especially within the sunsets - but would be more effective with some changes. These changes included removing all under-rendered details that were not the trees and sunsets as well as changing the
page color to better match the season
and illustration.
Outcome:
The “Sunsets through the Seasons” journal pages that I designed and illustrated provided a cohesive yet distinguishable set of calendar pages to be incorporated into a seasonally divided journal by a hypothetical stationary company. The journal was able to appeal to the stationary lovers and nature lovers alike, and the sunsets illustrations allowed others to connect to the art with their own fond memories of sunsets throughout their lives.
